Welcome to Övik

Örnsköldsvik – Övik to everyone who lives here – is a coastal town at the northern end of the High Coast World Heritage Site. This is a short English guide from the local site Vad händer i Övik. The rest of the site is in Swedish.

Getting around

The town centre is walkable, and the High Coast Trail starts right in it. Local and regional buses are run by DinTur and are cashless – pay by card on board. To see the smaller places along the coast, a car is easiest; Höga Kusten's travel page lists rental and taxi companies.

Frequently asked questions

Is it Örnsköldsvik or Övik?

Both. Örnsköldsvik is the official name; locals almost always say Övik. The town was named after the county governor Per Abraham Örnsköld.

How do I get to Örnsköldsvik from Stockholm?

By train is easiest: SJ runs trains from Stockholm Central to Örnsköldsvik, and the journey takes roughly 5–6 hours by day. There is also a night train, and Y-buss coaches. By car it is about five hours, mostly on the E4.

Can I fly to Örnsköldsvik?

Örnsköldsvik Airport (OER) has scheduled flights to Stockholm Arlanda when an airline operates the route. The route was suspended in June 2026, so check oer.se for the current situation. Umeå, Sundsvall-Timrå and Höga Kusten Airport in Kramfors are alternatives.

Is the rest of the website in English?

No. Our event calendar, lunch menus and detail pages are in Swedish. Most browsers can translate them for you, and the English pages link straight to the right Swedish page.
